DISTRICT 1

MY IMPACT IN LAUSD

I work with everyday people at the grassroots level to bring students and parents into decision making spaces at LAUSD and have worked with district staff to craft policies that center the voices of students and families with tangible resources. Though I fight to transform our entire public school system, my direct community work is ROOTED IN BOARD DISTRICT 1.

EQUITY

I helped push LAUSD to equitably allocate an additional $700 million dollars in annual funding to High and Highest need schools--a classification given to schools with higher percentages of target student populations, low academic outcomes, and higher rates of community indicators like incidents of gun violence and asthma rates. High and Highest need schools are concentrated in board district 1 with predominantly Black and Brown student populations.

BLACK STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Beginning in 2020, I worked with students, parents, advocacy groups, labor partners, and LAUSD leaders to develop and initiate the Black Student Achievement Plan, originally securing $36.5 million. We have continued the fight over the past 4 years, pushing the annual investments into Black students up to  over $120 million in annual funding for holistic and targeted resources designed to serve the unique needs of Black Students in LAUSD.

SCHOOL SAFETY

I worked with students, parents, advocacy groups, and labor partners to successfully redirect $25 million dollars away from  youth incarceration and punishment in LAUSD to put it toward community based safety strategies rooted in violence intervention, de-escalation, conflict resolution, and restorative justice.

 About Christian

As a community organizer and education advocate I have a unique and demonstrated commitment to centering the voices of the people and bringing about real change in LAUSD!

I have deep roots in South Central LA, and for the past three years, my professional career has been focused almost entirely on expanding LAUSD’s commitment to equity and educational justice for Black and Brown students, families and educators. My belief in social justice, organizing, and the power of our people have put me at the core of some of the most monumental community victories in recent history--securing the equitable re-allocation of close to one billion dollars of educational funding in LAUSD toward Black and Brown students that need it the most.

I am truly proud to say that my work empowers students and families to demand solutions on their own behalf and helps sustain partnerships with labor partners, educators, and district leaders to systematically eliminate and create policies that bring about real change.
